Visit of WFME Team to the Medical University “Prof. Dr. Paraskev Stoyanov” – Varna

In 2024, the National Evaluation and Accreditation Agency (NEAA) initiated a Recognition procedure by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). With the support of colleagues from medical universities and higher education institutions offering the Specialty from the Regulated Professions (SRP) “Medicine,” the NEAA prepared a self-assessment report (Full Application), focusing on the accreditation of medical education in Bulgaria.

As part of the Recognition procedure, a team of WFME experts visited the Medical University “Prof. Dr. Paraskev Stoyanov” – Varna (MU-Varna) from 12 to 14 May 2025. The visit was conducted in parallel with the visit of an NEAA Expert Group to MU-Varna as part of the accreditation procedure for SRP “Medicine.” The purpose of the visit was to observe the work of the NEAA Expert Group during the procedure.The visit was also attended by Prof. Eliza Stefanova, President of the NEAA, and Dyani Kurulenko, Junior Expert in International Cooperation at the Agency.

In the next stage of the WFME Recognition process, the team that visited MU-Varna will attend meetings of the NEAA’s Standing Committee on Healthcare and Sports and the Accreditation Council, where accreditation procedures for SRP “Medicine” will be reviewed.

The recognition of NEAA by WFME is of critical importance to medical universities and medical students in Bulgaria, as it is a requirement for the recognition of medical education in many countries outside the European Union, including the United States
